IBPOThe NAGE/IBPO National Executive Board met recently and I’m proud to announce a new benefit.  If any member is killed in the line of duty and the suspect(s) are unknown, the Union will offer up to a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible.  This is another example of how the IBPO is working to make sure you and your families are taken care of in times of need.

Member Benefits for You and Your Family

See the Member Benefits on the IBPO Homesite

You and your fellow officers joined the union to gain a voice on the job, respect in your deaprtment, and a good contract. But did you know this collective strength also has an impact in the marketplace?

As an IBPO member or retiree, you and your family have access to a number of programs, discounts, and benefits. From scholarship programs to help you fulfill your college dreams, to online university courses, to discounts on prescriptions and computers, your family will find savings opportunities around every corner.

Fulfill Your College Goals

Unions help working families fulfill their dreams in many different ways. At IBPO, this includes three different scholarship opportunities awarded each year, plus five different scholarship programs offered by SEIU.

IBPO/NAGE Scholarship Opportunities
Note: Scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year have been awarded. Please check back in April 2009 for information about scholarship opportunities for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The $1,000 Edward G. Gillooly Journalism Scholarship honors the late Ed Gillooly who was devoted to honoring working people through journalism. One scholarship is awarded annually.
The $1,000 Marc Lawson Criminal Justice Scholarship honors longtime IBPO member Marc Lawson for his lifelong service to the American public through law enforcement. One scholarship is awarded annually.
The IBPO/NAGE Scholarships program awards 50 scholarships in the amount of $500 each. Scholarships are chosen in a random drawing from among all applications received.

SEIU-Jesse Jackson Scholarship Program (Access Key: SEIJJ)
The $5,000 SEIU-Jesse Jackson scholarship is awarded to a student whose work and aspirations for economic and social justice reflect the values and accomplishments of the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

SEIU Nora Piore Scholarship Program
The Piore Scholarship award is renewable for up to four years, and is currently set at $4,375. The financial need of the applicants is considered during the selection process. This scholarship will re-open in 2010.

John Geagan Scholarships (Access Key: SEIJG)
SEIU will award two John Geagan scholarships annually for members, their children or local union staff who want to pursue a degree in labor studies. The scholarships are for $5,000 each to be expended over a 24-month period.

Union Plus Scholarship Program

The deadline to return completed applications was January 31, 2008. Check back in the fall for information about 2009 scholarship opportunities.

The Union Plus Scholarship offers $150,000 in scholarships annually to members, their spouses and dependents. Students who are beginning or continuing their secondary education are eligible. Awards are based on academic achievement, character, leadership, social awareness, career goals and financial need.

Since 1992, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $2.4 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their secondary education. The Union Plus Scholarship Program is offered through the Union Plus Education Foundation.

Eligibility for Scholarships: Current and retired members of unions participating in any Union Plus program, their spouses and their dependent children (including foster children, stepchildren, and any other child for whom the individual member provides greater than 50% of his or her support) can apply for a Union Plus Scholarship.

The individual must be accepted into an accredited college or university, community college or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. Note: Graduate students are now eligible.

Scholarship award amounts: The amount of the award ranges from $500 - $4,000. This is a one-time cash award sent to individual winners for study beginning in the fall of the same year.

Grantham University

To help make a college degree more affordable and attainable, Grantham is offering a special tuition grant to IBPO members. IBPO members can take advantage of a tuition grant which reduces the credit hour cost from $335 to $250 and includes the cost of required textbooks and software. Proof of membership is required to apply for the tuition grant.

Save money on tuition while you complete your degree in Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering, and more.

Member Benefits

Through member-only programs offered by SEIU in partnership with Union Privilege—a program founded by the AFL-CIO to provide consumer benefits—IBPO is able to provide you and your family with special discounts, rates, and savings. Union Privilege programs are designed specifically for working families, and you don't have to join Union Plus or Union Privilege; as a member or retiree of IBPO, you and your family are automatically eligible for benefits.

The Secret? Union Power.

Just as unions provide strength in the workplace, Union Privilege provides strength in the marketplace. Union Plus delivers the best benefits through the collective buying power of millions of union members.

*When inquiring about any benefits through Union Plus, be sure to identify yourself as a member of SEIU.

The IBPO Is About...

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING IBPO offers direct access to professional, experienced negotiators on staff, ready to help your local negotiate the best contract possible. Our success is unmatched. We get fair contract language, raises, and unbeatable health-care provisions in every contract we negotiate. Once you and your fellow members ratify your contract, you can expect continued support from your national representative who will help you resolve job-related issues that may arise.

POLITICAL ACTION The Committee on Political Education (COPE) is a voluntary political action fund that supports IBPO's political agenda. We finance pro-law-enforcement, pro-union candidates who support you and understand the legislation you need as a law enforcement officer.

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY IBPO has a powerful voice in Washington, D.C. and in State Houses across the country. Our full-time, dedicated legislative team works around the clock to safeguard and protect your jobs and your bargaining rights so that you can focus on the job of safeguarding and protecting the citizens of our cities and towns.

LEGAL EXPERTISE Unlike most unions, IBPO employs a staff of full-time labor attorneys whose only job is to work with and help our members resolve work-related issues. Our attorneys aren't working on wills, insurance claims, and dog-bite lawsuits—they're working in labor law to assist you. We provide legal services to our members on work-related issues, including arbitration hearings, disciplinary hearings and civil rights lawsuits.
